Description

A cozy, comforting dish featuring savory ground beef simmered in gravy, topped with fluffy dumplings—perfect for chilly evenings or family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85 percent lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if beef is leaner)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 0.5 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables
  • For the dumplings:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup milk (whole or 2 percent)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until it’s no longer pink, breaking it up as it cooks, and drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Mix in the tomato paste and cook for another minute. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture, stirring to coat evenly.
  4. Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Season with thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until thickened.
  5. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt for the dumplings. Add the softened butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Stir in the milk until the dough comes together.
  7. Drop heaping tablespoons of the dough on top of the beef mixture, aiming for 6 to 8 dumplings.
  8. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let the dumplings steam for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  9. Remove the skillet from heat and let it sit uncovered for about 5 minutes before serving hot.

Notes

For more flavor, consider adding Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce. Fresh herbs and spices can be incorporated for variation.
