Description

A comforting casserole that fuses the classic flavors of cheesesteak with pasta, featuring creamy cheeses and sautéed peppers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces penne or rotini pasta
  • 1 pound ground beef or thinly sliced beef steak
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 large red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded provolone cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil, then sauté onions and bell peppers for 6 to 8 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 more minute.
  4. Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart as it cooks until browned. Drain excess fat and season with salt, black pepper, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes, if desired.
  5. Reduce heat to low, stir in cream cheese until melted, then add milk and half of the provolone and mozzarella. Stir until smooth.
  6. Combine the pasta with the cheese sauce and beef mixture, tossing gently.
  7. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle with remaining cheeses.
  8. Bake uncovered for 18 to 22 minutes or until cheese is melted. Optionally, broil for 1 to 2 minutes for a golden finish.
  9. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Mix in sautéed mushrooms or spinach for added nutrition. A hint of Worcestershire sauce can enhance flavor.
