Description

A delightful garlic naan bread recipe that’s soft, fluffy, and perfect for pairing with curries or enjoying on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 package (0.25 oz) active dry yeast or instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm water (110°F)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 3 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro or parsley

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Stir gently and let sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yogurt and oil then incorporate the activated yeast mixture. Knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. After rising, divide dough into 8 equal portions. Shape into balls and roll each into an oval about 8 inches long.
  4. Preheat a greased skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for about 1 minute on each side until bubbly and golden brown.
  5. Mix minced garlic with melted butter. Brush the garlic butter over each naan and sprinkle with salt and cilantro or parsley.

Notes

Ensure your water is warm but not boiling for yeast activation. You can also cook naan in the oven on a preheated cast iron pan if a skillet is not available. Experiment with herbs and spices for added flavor.
